Study of Emotion and Anxiety in Children and Adults

A recent large U.S. population-based epidemiological study has shown that 25% of all adults in the US will meet criteria for an anxiety disorder sometime in their life. This underscores the importance of identifying factors that cause and maintain anxiety disorders and that lead to relapse.

Researchers at Stanford University are conducting a series of clinical research studies focused on social anxiety disorders in adults and anxiety disorders in children/adolescents. Our focus is on better understanding the relationship between emotional reactivity and the ability to regulate emotions by using different ways of thinking and shifting attention.

Our motivation is to elucidate the behavioral and brain mechanisms that render some people vulnerable to the prolonged suffering that occurs with anxiety disorders. We also hope to better understand how different interventions help people learn to deal with anxiety in a healthier way.
